We are committed to operating in as sustainable and responsible a way as possible, consciously placing the welfare of our customers, staff, communities & the environment at the forefront of everything we do.
Whilst we know there is still a long way to go, we have made a mindful start and are proud of what we have already achieved. We wanted to share some of this with you.

REDUCING WASTAGE

ELIMINATING OVER 10,000 PIECES OF SINGLE USE PLASTIC
We’ve removed all straws & stirrers & switched from plastic condiment bottles to reusable, lidded glass jars, cutting 10,000+ items of plastic a year from our operation.

TARGET 50% REDUCTION IN USE OF PAPER MENUS
To reduce paper waste, we have introduced QR codes to view our food & drink menus electronically. With your help, we aim to reduce the use of paper menus by at least 50% over the next 12 months.

AVOIDING UNNECESSARY PACKAGING
We’ve switched to a exciting new premium tonic range, Buzbee’s. Interesting flavours & low in calories, the brand is also passionate about bee conservation AND their product comes with ZERO plastic packaging.
We stock Tyrells crisps. Tyrells have improved packaging efficiency enabling them to take 298 lorries off the road annually, cutting almost 60k miles & saving over 94 tonnes of C02!
We buy all our loose bar snacks in supersized packs with less overall packaging.
We’re proactively engaging with suppliers, encouraging them to review their packaging & are committed to making decisions with packaging in mind when selecting products.

CUTTING FOOD WASTE
Our food waste initiatives range from offering Little Tummy dishes for those with a smaller appetite to doggy bags for leftovers to be taken home.
We’ve started making our own dehydrated fruit slices to garnish drinks which avoids wasting short life fresh fruit.
Each pub uses a compost bin for food peelings & scraps which provide valuable compost for our kitchen gardens.

RECYCLING

REDUCE REFUSE COLLECTIONS BY UP TO 77% BY THE END OF 2021
We have always sorted our glass, card, paper, plastic, cans & foil for recycling.  Now, we are also recycling our non-compostable food waste, which will be collected for conversion into organic fertiliser or animal slurry & sold to local farmers. By improving our food waste handling, we aim to reduce our refuse collections by up to 77% by the end of 2021.

2000 LITRES OF USED COOKING OIL CONVERTED TO BIO DIESEL!
Our used cooking oil is collected by Olleco who convert it into high quality, low carbon bio diesel with almost 2000 litres a year recycled across the Moogies pubs.

ENVIRONMENT

MINDFUL ENERGY MANAGEMENT
All our internal light bulbs have been converted to low energy LEDs.
We’re introducing energy management targets for our managers to ensure this is kept front of mind at all times.

LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY
Where possible, we’re using technology to reduce paper waste. Aside from menu QR codes, we’ve invested in iPads to take customer orders instead of notepads. All staff inductions & training are now done electronically & our previous paper rota has been replaced by a more efficient, electronic tool.
We accept contactless payments which will be valid for up to £100 from the date announced by the Government.
We are also investigating the option to provide customers with email receipts.

BULK BUYING TO REDUCE DELIVERIES BY 66%
When it comes to long life goods such as napkins, we buy in bulk, reducing the transport miles versus purchasing each month.

HOMEGROWN IS BEST
Nothing is fresher or tastes better than home grown produce – from plant to plate in the shortest time. We’re investing more time & effort into growing our own vegetables, salad items, fruit & herbs. We grow …
Spinach, lettuce, chard, courgettes, cucumbers, tomatoes, apples, walnuts, damsons, runner beans, beetroot, redcurrants, blueberries, blackberries, green beans, cavolo nero, peas, rosemary, mint, thyme, parsley

ECO FRIENDLY PAPER MENUS
For those still preferring a printed copy, all our menus are printed on FSC approved paper & are recycled after use.

SUPPLIERS

BUYING BRITISH & SUPPORT SEASONAL & LOCAL PRODUCE
Where possible, we support British produce & are working with our suppliers to build a better understanding of traceability.
Our new house ale, Moogies Fudgel, is 100% British, crafted for us by the Chiltern Brewery using UK Maris Otter malt & all British varieties of hops.
Our menus are refreshed every few months so that we can incorporate seasonal produce.
We are passionate about sourcing products locally & are constantly reviewing opportunities to buy from local producers.
For example, we buy our eggs from Dinton Farm (all free range). We buy venison & game from Wild Venison & Game based in Wood Eaton. Our ales are delivered direct from breweries in Buckinghamshire & our wine list includes an English Sparkling wine from Sussex.
This is an area that we are committed to expanding. We look forward to bringing you more exciting local produce.

SUSTAINABLY SOURCED SEAFOOD
When it comes to our seafood, we buy everything from the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) approved & MSC award winning supplier The Stickleback Fish Company Ltd. This gives us peace of mind that all our seafood is sustainably sourced. They are also members of the SRA (Sustainable Restaurant Association), a body giving advice to business on a wide range of environmental issues.

RAINFOREST ALLIANCE CERTIFIED
Our tea & coffee is fully Rainforest Alliance Certified, meaning the wellbeing of the environment & the local tea farmers are both supported.

PEOPLE

PROVIDING LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FOR 75 PEOPLE
We currently employ at least 75 people each month & are always keen to offer positions to residents from our village locations where it can often be more difficult to find local employment.
We also engage with the local Buckinghamshire College Group in both recruitment & offering apprenticeships.

INVESTING IN THEIR FUTURE
We are investing in a new online training & development platform. By the end of 2021, all of our permanent team members will have access to this to support their career progression.

NEW GENERAL MANAGER – SUSTAINABILITY
As a sign of our commitment, we have created this new role within our business to maintain focus on sustainability across our operations.

SUPPORTING OUR STAFF 24/7, 365 DAYS A YEAR
Moogies values the welfare of its staff as a priority & has invested in an Employee Assistance Program to provide all our staff, including our casual team, with access to independent, free & 100% confidential support. By telephone, online chat, via their website or using their APP, staff can get support on anything that’s worrying them. Family matters | Relationships |Bereavement & illness | Debt advice | Legal issues & more.

COMMUNITIES

OVER £750,000 INVESTED IN RE-OPENING & UPGRADING LOCAL PUBS
Moogies was established in 2013 to acquire existing pubs & restaurants that were underperforming or closed & through investment, turn them into sustainable businesses, recognised & valued by the communities they serve. The company is 100% privately owned, operated & financed, allowing us to make all decisions in the best interest of the venues, our customers & the people who work for us.

MORE THAN JUST A PUB
We like to engage with the local community in a number of ways, including providing support for local fundraising events, showcasing art from local artists, running a local book club from The Black Boy, inviting local musicians to get involved with our summer busking event & of course providing local employment!

PARTNERING WITH OUR COMPANY CHARITY
We’ve always supported local charities. Our ‘dish donation scheme’ has raised over £5,500 for local charities so far. (See over for details).
We also host monthly charity quiz nights, put collection tins on the bar, raise funds through raffles & staff fundraising initiatives & support the charities own fundraising events where we can.
Our current ‘Company Charity’ is The PACE Centre, based in Aylesbury, a ground-breaking children’s charity that transforms the lives of children & young people with motor disorders, such as cerebral palsy.
In 2021, we aim to build our relationship further with PACE by introducing opportunities for our staff to interact directly with the charity & vice versa.

£3,500 FROM OUR GIVEBACK SCHEME
Our Moogies Giveback Scheme offers 10% off the food bill for nurses, members of the police force, emergency services or armed forces, community care workers, prison officers, teachers & teaching assistants. It’s our gesture in recognition of the great work they do. To date, the scheme has provided savings of £3,500.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

5* FOOD HYGIENE RATING AT EVERY VENUE
We pride ourselves on our achievement of the highest hygiene standards relating to how your food is handled, the physical condition of our venues & how we manage food safety.

FULL ALLERGEN INFORMATION PROVIDED
All our dishes are labelled on the menu with a number code for any allergens present. Our chefs are always happy to adjust dishes where possible to meet any specific dietary requirements.

PROVIDING MORE HEALTHIER OPTIONS & VEGAN / VEGETARIAN DISHES
Our chefs are happy to make adjustments for you. They can:
-leave off a dressing or sauce or serve it on the side.
-swap fries for a serving of vegetables or salad.
-avoid buttering vegetables.
-serve a burger ‘bunless’.
Please just let us know when you order.

We already offer an interesting selection of low & non-alcohol alternatives as well as healthier low calorie drinks & are working hard to expand our offering. During 2021 we will continue to introduce a variety of new products that have been developed in the UK.
We have introduced more dishes for those customers looking to reduce the amount of meat they eat. We can also recommend a great vegan wine, with 25% of our wine list being vegan friendly.

MINDFUL ABOUT OUR MEAT
When it comes meat, we have developed our Mindful Grill, offering interesting & often overlooked cuts with great provenance.
Furthermore, all our red meat is sourced in the UK & is all free range.
